Botulinum A toxin injections which are best known as Botox have been widely used in cosmetics globally for over ten years, to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and aging that can make us look older and tired. It has FDA approval for this indication .
How does it work?
Minute amounts of the injected toxin blocks the signals to the nerves that trigger the movement and contraction of specific muscles . This makes the muscles that are creating the line or wrinkle, or asymmetry, relax and move less powerfully. A facial area does not need to be completely frozen to soften the lines targeted. With botox and dermal fillers, done well, friends should only comment on how refreshed you look!
As with fillers, the effect is not permanent but the natural collagen has had a chance to build up and naturally soften the lines while the treatment was working. The effects of Botulinum generally lasts 4-6 months.
Tiny injections are introduced with very fine needles. Ice packs numb the area making it a comfortable process. It can take up to 2 weeks for the full effect to work to produce the more youthful and refreshed appearance.
